What Size Should Airbnb Photos Be? Airbnb's Real Minimum

What size should Airbnb photos be? At least 1024 x 683 px per Airbnb's help centre, in landscape. Plus the specs people quote that Airbnb never published.

What size should Airbnb photos be? At least 1024 × 683 pixels, shot in landscape. That is the only minimum Airbnb publishes, and its own advice after that is one line: "When in doubt, a bigger photo is better." Everything else you have read — a 4 MB cap, a required 4:3 ratio, a JPEG-only rule — Airbnb does not say anywhere.

That is the short answer. Below is where the number comes from, the second number Airbnb publishes that contradicts the first, and what I actually hand over on an Airbnb photography in the Inland Empire shoot.

Airbnb's published minimum, in Airbnb's own words

Airbnb's help centre article on adding photos says it plainly:

"Use photos that are at least 1024px x 683px. When in doubt, a bigger photo is better."

And on orientation:

"Use landscape format: Photos in search results are all displayed in landscape—vertical photos won't showcase your space as well."

That page (Airbnb Help Centre, article 746) says nothing about file format. Nothing about a maximum file size. Nothing about a required aspect ratio.

Airbnb's own two pages disagree

Here is the part nobody writing about this mentions. Airbnb's hosting Resource Centre guide to taking listing photos asks for a different number: at least 1200 × 800 pixels, and suggests keeping files to "up to about 10 megabytes."

Both pages are Airbnb's. They do not agree. The safe reading is to treat 1200 × 800 as the floor, because it satisfies both, and to go well past it anyway — which is what the "bigger is better" line is really telling you.

Airbnb's two published photo minimums compared with a delivered listing fileThree nested rectangles drawn to true relative scale: Airbnb's help centre minimum of 1024 by 683 pixels, Airbnb's resource centre figure of 1200 by 800 pixels, and a delivered file at the 3000 by 2000 pixel MLS ceiling.3000 × 2000what I deliver,at the MLS ceiling1200 × 800Resource Centre1024 × 683Help Centre minimumDRAWN TO SCALE
All three are 3:2 frames. The gap between Airbnb's floor and a delivered file is the point.

Then Airbnb crops your photo into a square anyway

The advice everyone repeats is "shoot 3:2 landscape." What Airbnb's own guide to adding photos actually says is that it crops "photos into squares to fit in Airbnb's search results and on your listing."

So the frame a guest sees first — the one in search results, the one that decides whether they tap — is a square cut out of your landscape photo. Anything you pushed to the far left or right edge is gone at that size.

This changes how you frame, not what size you export. Keep the subject of each shot near the centre third. A bed shoved to the right edge of a wide frame looks balanced in your gallery and looks like a wall in search.

What I actually deliver

I deliver short-term rental sets at standard MLS sizing — the same spec I use for a sale listing, which runs up to 3000 × 2000 pixels and 15 MB per image under California MLS photo requirements. That clears Airbnb's minimum on every edge with room to spare, and it means the same set works if the property ever goes on the market.

They are not enormous files, and they shouldn't be. Airbnb photos need to be big enough to look sharp on a laptop and a phone, not print-sized. Past a point you are uploading detail the platform throws away.

Most of the set is landscape, because that is what Airbnb displays. The exception is the detail shot — a reading nook, a tiled shower, a coffee setup on a windowsill — where the composition genuinely wants a vertical frame. Those go in. A listing that is 100% wide shots of rooms reads like a floor plan; the verticals are where a place starts to feel like somewhere you'd stay.

The specs people quote that Airbnb never published

Search this question and you will be told, confidently, that Airbnb requires a 4:3 aspect ratio, caps files at 4 MB, accepts only JPEG, and recommends 1440 × 960. I went through Airbnb's own help and resource pages for this article. None of those figures appear on any of them.

They are not necessarily bad advice. A 4 MB file will upload fine. JPEG is sensible. But they are third-party numbers that have been repeated until they read like policy, and if you are making decisions about a shoot based on them, you should know they are not Airbnb's.

Two things genuinely are Airbnb's, and they are the two worth building a shoot around: a published pixel floor, and a square crop in search.

The short version

  1. Minimum: 1024 × 683 px per Airbnb's help centre; 1200 × 800 px per its resource centre. Clear the higher one.
  2. Orientation: landscape for the bulk of the set. Verticals only where a detail shot asks for one.
  3. Framing: subject in the centre third, because search shows a square crop.
  4. File size: Airbnb publishes no hard cap. Its own guide suggests staying around 10 MB.
  5. Format: Airbnb doesn't specify one. JPEG is the safe default.

Getting a short-term rental ready to list in Riverside or the wider Inland Empire? Book a shoot — Essential $249, Standard $329, Premium $500 — and the files arrive sized and framed for how Airbnb actually displays them.
