Why Does the Location Matter More Than the Backdrop?

A good portrait location isn't chosen because it looks nice in person — it's chosen for what it does to a photograph. Dustyn picks parks with big mature trees because the canopy softens midday sun into something flattering instead of harsh, and shoots them in autumn when the leaves put warm color into the background for free. Open sky, bare fields, and midday parking lots are the enemy. The right spot, at the right time of day, does more for a family portrait than any amount of editing afterward.

What Happens When the Kids Aren't Cooperating?

Sometimes the kids are fussy, and there is nothing you can really do about that. Anyone who promises otherwise hasn't photographed enough families. What actually works: try to get their attention, and if that doesn't land, step back and let the parents handle it rather than forcing the frame. Kids read pressure instantly and it shows in the photo. Sessions are paced with that in mind — the full group goes first while everyone's patience is intact, then the smaller groupings, then whoever's still willing. Nobody leaves feeling like the session was a fight.

Senior portraits with multiple locations and unlimited outfit changes, built around the student rather than a template. Individual portraits for anyone who just wants a good photo of themselves that isn't a headshot. Every session is delivered as edited, full-resolution digital files with a print release, so you can order cards and enlargements from whatever lab you like.

Dustyn Reno personally shoots every portrait session. He's photographed families for Christmas card sets, picking a park with big trees in autumn specifically for the light quality and the color the season put in the canopy — location chosen for what it does to a photograph, not just for scenery. He's also candid about the part no photographer controls: sometimes the kids are fussy, and there is nothing you can really do about that. After the first attempts to get a child's attention, the right move is to step back and let the parents handle it rather than force the frame.

In October 2025 I shot an extended-family portrait session in Riverside CA — fifteen people across three generations at a park with mature trees, timed for the last ninety minutes of usable light. We photographed the full group first while everyone's patience was intact, then broke into each family unit, then the grandparents alone. The client had roughly thirty edited images to choose from for their holiday cards.

These are session rates, not starting points — what you see is what a session costs. Every session includes edited, full-resolution digital files and a print release, so you order prints and cards from whatever lab you prefer. On-location across Riverside and the Inland Empire with no travel fee within 30 miles. Add-ons: extra retouched image $25, additional location $75, additional 30 minutes $100, extra person $25.

Portrait images are edited — color, exposure, and crop — and are made for personal use, holiday cards, and prints. Headshots are individually retouched to a professional standard for business use, with skin and blemish work on each selected frame. Where do the sessions take place?
On location across Riverside and the Inland Empire — Corona, Ontario, Rancho Cucamonga, Temecula, Murrieta, San Bernardino, and Redlands — plus LA and Orange County. Parks with mature trees are a frequent choice for the light they give. Your own home or yard works too, and there's no travel fee within 30 miles of Riverside.
What should we wear?
Coordinate rather than match. Pick two or three colors that sit well together and let everyone work within that range instead of putting the whole family in identical white shirts. Solid colors and simple textures photograph better than tight patterns, which can shimmer oddly on camera. Dress for the weather — cold, uncomfortable people look cold and uncomfortable in photographs.
What if the weather turns?
Overcast is genuinely good for portraits — it's a giant softbox and it removes harsh shadows entirely. Actual rain gets rescheduled at no charge. Because outdoor sessions are timed around the light, an hour's shift in the schedule is often all that's needed rather than a whole new date.
How many people can be in a session?
Portrait Mini covers up to five people and a Family Session up to six. For extended families and multi-generation groups, the Extended Session covers up to fifteen across two hours, which leaves time to photograph the full group plus each family unit separately. Beyond fifteen, it's quoted per event — additional people are $25 each on the standard sessions.
Do you sell prints, albums, or canvases?
No — delivery is digital only, and every session includes a print release. You get edited, full-resolution files and order prints, cards, albums, or canvases yourself from whatever lab you prefer. It keeps the session price honest and means you're not buying your own photos back one enlargement at a time.
